MY WALKING WORLD  David Preston

My Ascent of Ben Nevis 28/04/07

28/04/07 - I climbed Ben Nevis from the Glen Nevis Camp Site on the Saturday. I stayed at the site for 2 nights after my Backpack walk from Corrour and  found it to be excellent with immaculate toilets and showers and a pub 500 metres away.  This is the second time I had climbed Ben Nevis and it was pleasant to climb the mountain in glorious sunshine. The first time was in 1992 when it was also good weather and not much had changed, the paths had been improved but the views from the summit were as usual superb

Just a reminder about the obvious precautions to take

Near the start of the zig zags

After the zig zags the summit plateau comes into view and although I expected some snow I did not think there would be as much as this

Superb cornices and you can see the obvious danger

You need to keep well back from the edge - its along way down

Superb scenery but the North facing cliffs drop vertically

The remains of the Observatory on the summit. There was over three feet of snow

Myself on the summit. Luckily I was warm in the glorious sunshine but as a precaution I had long trousers in my rucksack if needed

The plaque on the summit partly obscured by the depth of the snow

The view on the way off the summit looking down on Loch Linne and Loch Eil

I must mention the importance of being careful when leaving the summit in bad weather. The summit plateau is surrounded by steep cliffs and in the case of bad visibility you must take care and use the correct compass bearing - consult the appropriate map
