MY WALKING WORLD  David Preston

A weekend in Wales

03/02/07 I drove down to the Black Mountains near Hay on Wye for the weekend to climb some of the Nuttalls in the area.

The Nuttalls are summits of 2000ft.

The weather was ideal with clear skies and was perfect for walking in this superb area.

I started the walk from Capel - y ffin and the picture on the right is the small Chapel which lies on the old boundary of Monmouthshire and Breconshire

Todays summits were

Black Mountain South Top

Black Mountain

Twmpa

Rhos Dirion

Chwarel y Fan

Looking across the valley at Chwarel Fan where I will be later in the afternoon. Once up on the ridge the walking is fairly easy

Once on the Black Mountain South Top this is the view looking south along Offas Dyke Path

Sunday 04/02/07

I stayed the previous night in Llandidrod Wells and then drove up to the Caban-coch Reservoir near Rhayader for a walk in the hills above the Elan Valley

Todays walk climbed Gorllwyn and Drygarn Fawr

The photo on the right shows the frost covered fields at the start of the walk

On the summit of Gorllwyn looking south

Looking across from Gorllwyn at the summit of Drygarn Fawr which is about three miles away

There are very few paths and although it looks easy its hard work walking across this sort of terrain

If you find a shhep track heading in the general direction you want to go my advice is follow it. Its a lot easier than trying to make your own way across this tussock grass and bogs

If you look closely you can just make out the the two beehive shaped cairns

The twin cairns on the summit of Drygarn Fawr. The second one is about a quarter of a mile away

Myself near the cairns, a really quiet area, I only met four people all day

Looking back the way I had come with Gorllwyn in the distance

There was faint track all the way back to the road which I think was made by a farmer on his Quad bike. If you find it stick with it, its mavellous.

Its not marked on the map
