MY WALKING WORLD  David Preston

The Brecon Beacons

15/09/07 - A weekend in the Brecon Beacons- - I drove down to South Wales to climb the last six mountains in the guidebook, since 17/11/02 I had climbed 182 and these six would complete the list of Mountains complied by John and Anne Nuttall in their Guidebook published by Cicerone

Saturday - The walk started from near the village of Glyntawe and climbed Fan Hir, Fan Brycheiniog, Picws Du, Waun Lefrith and Garreg Las. The weather was superb and the distance was about 16 miles

Looking across to Garreg Las from the slopes of Waun Lefrith

Two fine ancient cairns on the summit of Garreg Las. Both have been excavated - who built them and why, when and what for? I would love to know. Did the builders live up here or walk up every day, were they burial mounds or places of worship?

So many questions

After climbing Garreg Las it was a long walk across this valley and over the ridge in the distance and still quite a way back to the start point

Navigation in poor weather conditions would not be easy across here

Camping at the Site belonging to Dan-yr-Ogof showcaves which was just down the road from the start point

£5.00 per night and clean showers and washrooms - Pub just down the road for food

17/09/07 - Sunday and the weather was not as nice as the previous day. The final mountain to complete the whole of the 2000ft Summits of Wales was Cefn Yr Ystrad near the Pontsticill Reservoir which is just north of Merthyr Tydfil

Cefn Yr Ystrad means Ridge of the Dale and the walk starts just outside the village Pontsticill

Looking up the hillside from the track which eventually goes across to the Talybont Reservoir

Almost there, the summit has 2 large cairns, this is one of them. Is there a connection with yesterdays 2 large cairns?
