MY WALKING WORLD David Preston

Lake Garda in Italy 16/06/03

I recently went on my holidays to Lake Garda in Italy, 10 days of glorious scenery, good food and sunny weather, during this holiday we went on day trips to Venice and Verona, I also went on a days walking organised by the Alpine Group of Limone

This days walk was to the mountain refuge "Bonaventura Segala" at 1215 metres. after a rest and refreshments at the hut a small party of us climbed to the summit of Monte Carone 1621 metres, well worth climbing, spectacular views from the summit.

This was my first experience of walking in the Dolomites, although this area was relatively low compared with some of the snow capped peaks that I could see to the north, nevertheless it was a wonderful experience, the whole day was nearly 10 hours which obviously included many rest stops, one thing that was different from my walks in Britain was the fact that most of the ascent was through woodland and it was only the ascent up one rock face which had steps and safety rope and the final 100 metres that you could see the surrounding mountains

Limone is a beautiful place to stay and surrounded by stunning scenery

The Mountain Refuge Bonaventura Segala, for a donation they provided Pasta and water

One of the easy bits, steps cut into the rock

1621 metres- the highest I have climbed up to now- here's hoping I can improve on that !

Just below the summit of Monte Carona, open country and somewhere level to stand

And afterwards when back down at the Hotel!

Limone is a lovely place for a Holiday, the temperature in the middle of June was around 30C so walking in the forest was ideal as there was plenty of shade
