Circular walk - Mam Tor -Lose Hill- Castleton and Winnats Pass

12/02/06 - Todays walk should have been on the Nantile Ridge in Snowdonia with the 40sWalkersNorth Club but the walk had to be cancelled due to the difficult conditions.  Snow had spread over Scotland, Northern England and North Wales during the night and not long after I had set off for Wales I had a phone call from the walk leader to say that conditions over there were not gone and the walk would have to be postponed to another day. A wise precaution as although we walk in all weathers, sometimes the road conditions in the mountainous areas can pose more of a problem than the walking.

So it was a quick change of plan, call back at home and pick up the Peak District maps and then over to Mam Tor. I am very lucky living in Macclesfield as its only a good half hour away. This is a route you can do in almost any weather as there not much chance of getting lost. And you have the added bonus of coming through Castleton on the walk back where you can get hot food and a drink

Looking towards Hollins Cross and Lose Hill, it was a bitterly cold wind

I perched my camera on the Marker post at Hollins Cross. It was in danger of being blown off in the fiercely strong wind and the spindrift

This was approximately the spot where I completed the 1000th mile in my Brasher Walking Boots - Great boots with a few miles left in them yet

On the way up Winnats Pass - Years ago this was the main stage coach route between Manchester and Sheffield, its really steep and must have been tiring for the horses.

It certainly slows the cars up when they get near the top

Nearly back at the car, its been a great walk in very bracing conditions and poor visibility
