MY WALKING WORLD  David Preston

31/07/08 - The ascent of Suilven in Northern  Scotland

One of the mountains that I wanted to climb was Suilven in northern Scotland, its not high enough to be a Munro or a Corbett but you have just got to look at it to realise why its got to be done.

`Suilven 731 metres seen from the track after passing Glencanisp Lodge.

It really does look spectacular

About 3 miles from the start the path leads off from the main track and is marked by a cairn

After crossing rough moorland you arrive  on the shores of several lochans, the hard work starts now and its a steep climb from now on

The steep climb goes up to the low notch on the ridge

Half way up the slope I could see two walkers ahead of me

Catching up the two walkers who had paused for a break

The summit cairn on Suilven

On Suilven at last

It was very windy on the summit and great care was needed particulay on the narrow ridge lower down

Unusually lower down the ridge there is a substantial wall  built across it

Looking back along the ridge at the two walkers descending from the summit

Back at the col on the ridge looking down to the moorland below. You can see the path winding across the moorland between the lochans

Starting down the steep gully, great care was needed as it is steeper than it looks

Halfway down and looking back up

Back down on the track and looking back towards the start of the walk

You can see the track going over the hill in the distance

Looking up the stream with Canisp showing its summit over the hill

Looking back from the car park up the lane that leads to Glencanisp Lodge. Suilven on the right
